# Room Nights

How many rooms you actually sold in the period, against last year, your target and your share of online demand.

The **Room Nights** widget shows the total number of room nights sold across the period. A **room night** is 1 room sold for 1 night. Room nights are the volume side of yield.

[Revenue](/revhero-docs/your-hotels-performance/dashboard/revenue.md) tells you how much money came in. This widget tells you how many rooms you sold.

Room Nights and Revenue are the only 2 widgets that also show **Online Market Share**.

![A room night is one room, for one night](https://272652298-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FnzEa7YGji6t92Mfc0ZJ1%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-aa9abe714206c9d7d1dfd32481b8829f80588b47%2Fa-room-night-is-one-room-for-one-night.svg?alt=media)

*2 rooms for 3 nights is 6 room nights. Count every booking that way and you reach the period total.*

## What you see

| Element | What it means |
| -------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Headline value, purple (for example `883`) | Room nights for the period. Where the dates are still ahead, the figure is forecast |
| **VS STLY** (for example `812` `↑ 8.74%`) | STLY means Same Time Last Year. It is the room nights at the same point in last year's booking window |
| **LY Actual** (for example `831` `↑ 6.26%`) | The room nights last year finally reached for the same period |
| **Forecasting** (for example `878` `↑ 0.57%`) | The projected close. Expanded view only |
| Budget bar (for example `Budget: 840` · `105.12%`) | Your target and your attainment against it |
| **Online Market Share CY / LY** | Your share of online demand this year, against the same point last year |

Green figures mean you are ahead. Red means behind. Grey means flat. Click the ⤢ icon to expand the card and see **Forecasting** and the **Reference Date**.

{% hint style="info" %}
You enter budget room nights directly in [Budget & Target](/revhero-docs/your-hotels-performance/budget-target.md). Where you set none, a purple **Add budget** link appears in place of the bar. This is the normal empty state, not a fault.
{% endhint %}

## The chart

Over a full month, or any longer range, the chart draws 3 lines. Room nights are on the vertical axis, with 1 point for each stay date.

| Line | What it shows |
| ---------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------ |
| **Purple**, labelled with the month in view (for example `JUNE`) | Current room nights for each stay date |
| **Teal `STLY`** | The same dates last year |
| **Pink dashed `FORECASTING`** | The projection, starting where current data ends |

Pick a short custom range of only a few days and the chart changes to paired bars. You get a purple current-period bar beside a teal STLY bar for each day. There is no forecast series in that shape.

Hold your pointer over any date to see its figures: the current stay date and value, the same date last year, and **LY Actual**. The line chart adds **Forecasting**. On today's date, the first row reads `Today:` instead of the date.

## How to read it

| What you see | What to do |
| ------------------------------------------ | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Up against STLY but down against LY Actual | You are pacing ahead, but last year finished higher. Check [Booking Pace](/revhero-docs/your-hotels-performance/dashboard/booking-pace.md) for the direction of travel |
| Up against both | Genuine outperformance |
| Down against STLY | You are behind pace. Check [Pickup](/revhero-docs/your-hotels-performance/dashboard/pickup.md) for recent movement |

**Look closely at single-day patterns.** Large spikes on single dates usually mean a group or an event. Use the **Segmentation** filter to confirm this. Flat midweek with weekend peaks is the normal leisure shape. Corporate hotels show the opposite shape.

**Use Online Market Share as a fairness check.** **CY** is your share this year. **LY** is your share at the same point last year. Room nights down and share down means you are losing ground. Check whether [Competitor Rate Analysis](/revhero-docs/your-hotels-performance/dashboard/competitor-rate-analysis.md) shows competitors pricing below you. Room nights down but share up means the market is shrinking. It is normal to hold your rates in that case.

**Read room nights with revenue.** Revenue up with room nights flat means rate carried the month. Room nights up with revenue flat means you discounted too much.

**Watch capacity.** Daily room nights close to your capacity warn you of oversell risk early. You can then close your lowest room types and brief the front desk. Daily room nights well below capacity show you inventory to push.

## If something looks wrong

| What you see | Usual cause | What to do |
| ----------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| 0 across many dates | No published rate plans, or no available inventory | Publish on the [Yielding Board](/revhero-docs/setting-your-rates/yielding-board.md). Check inventory in [Settings](/revhero-docs/your-hotels-setup/settings/room-types-and-inventory.md) |
| More room nights than you have rooms | Available inventory is set wrong, or groups are committed beyond capacity | Review your inventory and your group commitments |
| No Online Market Share | Online demand tracking is not switched on for the property | Check [Integrations](/revhero-docs/your-hotels-setup/integrations.md) |
| `LY Actual: —` in the tooltip | Less than 12 months of history | Use the budget bar until you have a full year |
| Room nights fall overnight with no cancellation | A reservation moved segment or moved room type | Check the [Event Log](/revhero-docs/automation/event-log.md) |

## Common questions

**Are group bookings counted?** Yes, by default. Use **Segmentation** to exclude them.

**Are cancellations subtracted?** That depends on the **Cancellations** tick box in the filter bar.

**Can I see room nights for each channel?** Yes. Change [Business Mix](/revhero-docs/your-hotels-performance/dashboard/business-mix.md) to the Room Nights view.
