# W

Hotel and revenue management terms beginning with W.

## Walk (walked guest)

A walk is a guest with a confirmed booking whom you cannot accommodate, so you move them to another hotel. You pay for their room there, and normally for their transport too.

**Example.** You are overbooked and cannot take the last arrival of the day. The guest is walked to a nearby hotel of equal or higher standard.

Walking is expensive. It costs you the alternative room and it costs you the guest's trust. It is the main risk in overbooking, and the reason overbooking levels are set carefully.

## Wash factor

The wash factor is the share of booked room nights that are never used. It covers cancellations, no-shows, early departures and group blocks that do not fill.

**Wash factor = (booked room nights − actual room nights) ÷ booked room nights × 100**

**Example.** A group books 100 room nights and uses only 85. Wash factor = (100 − 85) ÷ 100 × 100 = **15%**.

You use it to correct your forecast and to set overbooking levels. It can differ by segment, by day of week and by season, so measure it separately for each.

## Wholesaler

A wholesaler buys rooms from you in bulk at a negotiated net rate, then resells them to travel agents, tour operators and OTAs, often inside a package.

**Example.** A wholesaler takes 500 room nights for the season at a fixed net rate and sells them on through several agencies.

Wholesale business fills your base demand, which is most useful in low season. In return you see less of where your rooms end up and at what price, so contracts and sell limits matter.

## Worldspan

Worldspan is one of the major Global Distribution Systems, used by travel agents worldwide to search and book flights, hotels and other travel services. It is owned by Travelport.

**Example.** A travel agent searches Worldspan for rooms in a city and books a stay for a client.

To be sold through Worldspan your hotel must take part in the GDS, through a central reservation system or a distribution partner.
