# N

Hotel and revenue management terms beginning with N.

## Negotiated Rate

An agreed rate between a hotel and a company or organisation that books rooms or space regularly. It sits below your standard rate.

You earn less per booking but you gain steady, repeat business through the year. Negotiated rates are how most hotels build their corporate base.

## Net Rate

A rate given to a distributor or travel partner with no commission included. The distributor then adds its own markup to set the price the guest pays.

Net rates are used in the merchant model and in wholesale contracts. You control what you receive; the partner controls what it charges on top.

## Net Revenue

The revenue you keep after commissions, distribution costs, discounts and refunds are taken off. It is what a booking is actually worth to you.

**Net revenue = gross revenue − commissions − fees − discounts − refunds**

A guest books a room for €200 through an OTA that charges 20% commission, which is €40. Net revenue = €200 − €40 = €160.

Two bookings at the same price can be worth very different amounts, depending on the channel they came through. Look at net revenue per channel and per segment before you decide where to push business.

## Net Room Nights (Net RN)

The room nights you expect to actually materialise, once cancellations and no-shows are taken off.

**Net RN = gross RN − cancellations − no-shows**

Net room nights give a more realistic base for an occupancy or revenue forecast than gross room nights do.

## NGS (Next Generation Seamless)

A connectivity standard for hotel reservation systems that keeps information in step across the web.

It improves the link between hotels and the GDS, so that rates, availability, descriptions, images and policies update in real time on every connected platform.

## No-Show

A guest with a confirmed booking who does not arrive and does not cancel. The room stays unsold for that night.

You can protect the revenue by taking a card guarantee, charging a no-show fee — often one night — releasing the room for resale after a set time, or using a stricter cancellation policy on the rate plan.

## No-Show Rate

The share of confirmed bookings where the guest never arrives and never cancels.

**No-show rate % = no-shows ÷ confirmed bookings × 100**

Out of 200 confirmed bookings, 12 guests did not arrive. No-show rate = 12 ÷ 200 × 100 = 6%.

Your no-show rate tells you how far you can safely overbook. It varies by channel and by booking window, so look at it by segment rather than as one number for the hotel.

## Non-Refundable Rate

A discounted rate plan that cannot be cancelled or changed without losing the money. The guest pays up front and accepts the risk in return for a lower price.

The discount is usually 5% to 15% below BAR. Non-refundable rates secure the revenue early and suit price-sensitive guests. A large non-refundable share makes your position steadier, but gives your guests no flexibility.

## NOP (Net Operating Profit)

What the hotel earns from its operations after all operating expenses. It is also called net operating income, or NOI.

**NOP = total operating revenue − total operating expenses**

It leaves out tax, interest and depreciation, so it shows how well the hotel is run rather than how it is financed.

## NRevPAR (Net Revenue Per Available Room)

RevPAR after distribution costs. It shows what each available room really earned you, once commissions and fees are removed.

**NRevPAR = (net room revenue − distribution costs) ÷ available rooms**

NRevPAR is harder to produce than RevPAR, because you need your channel costs. It is worth the effort: it is the number that tells you whether an expensive channel is paying for itself.
