# Single supplement

What 1 adult pays in a room built for 2, the two ways to set that rule, and how to sell 1 adult at the 2-adult rate.

The **single supplement** sets what 1 adult pays in a room designed for 2 adults. It is the only supplement that applies to the 1-adult row of each room type. A **supplement** is an amount that raises or lowers a rate, compared to the base rate.

Set it correctly and solo bookings convert. Set it too high and solo guests stop booking. Set it too low and you have given the room away.

Open **Pricing**, open a structure, then choose **Edit Supplement Structure**. The single supplement has its own column on the Per Occupancy grid. The 1-adult row of each room type carries a **Single Use** tag in the column on the far left.

{% hint style="info" %}
The single supplement appears only for Per Occupancy room types. Per Unit room types hide every occupancy below their base occupancy, so a 4-person villa has no 1-adult row at all.
{% endhint %}

Every example on this page uses the same Base Rate of €200 for 2 adults. The per-person rate is therefore €100.

*The same €200 room gives a different 1-adult rate under each method, and the other supplements then apply on top.*

## Two ways to set the rule

Contracts describe single occupancy in 2 different ways, so revhero supports both.

| Method | What it does | Use it when your contract reads… |
| --------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Per Person Charge** | Builds the 1-adult rate from the per-person rate, plus the amount you set | *"single occupancy, plus €X per night"* |
| **Base Discount** | Takes a percentage off the 2-adult rate | *"single occupancy pays X% less than the double rate"* |

Both methods produce a 1-adult rate. They start from different rates, so they behave differently when your Base Rate changes. Choose the method that matches how your contract is written.

### Per Person Charge, step by step

The per-person rate on a €200 Base Rate is €100. The charge you set is added to it.

| Charge you set | 1-adult rate                |
| -------------- | --------------------------- |
| €0             | €100                        |
| €25            | €125                        |
| €50            | €150                        |
| €100           | €200 — the same as 2 adults |

### Base Discount, step by step

On the same €200 Base Rate, the discount comes off the 2-adult rate.

| Discount you set | 1-adult rate |
| ---------------- | ------------ |
| 0%               | €200         |
| 25%              | €150         |
| 50%              | €100         |
| 75%              | €50          |

Base Discount is the more common contract format. It matches how guests and channels think about single occupancy: a percentage off the double rate.

## The order the supplements apply in

Revhero builds the 1-adult rate first. The Room Type Supplement and the Board Supplement then apply on top of that rate.

This example uses a €200 Base Rate with a 25% Base Discount, a sea-view room at +€15 per person, and half board at +€25 per adult.

| Step | Cell                               | What is added                 | Running total |
| ---- | ---------------------------------- | ----------------------------- | ------------- |
| 1    | Base room, base board, 1 adult     | 25% off the €200 2-adult rate | €150          |
| 2    | Sea-view room, base board, 1 adult | €15 for 1 person              | €165          |
| 3    | Sea-view room, half board, 1 adult | €25 for 1 adult               | €190          |

Changing the single supplement moves the 1-adult rows only. Every other row stays where it was.

## Selling 1 adult at the 2-adult rate

This is a common distribution technique. You want the room type to appear in a search for 1 adult, so the room is visible and bookable to solo guests. You also want that solo guest to pay the same as 2 adults, because the room and its cost are the same either way.

Two things have to be true. The room type must sell a 1-adult occupancy, which comes from its minimum PAX setting in your channel manager — see [Occupancy combinations](/revhero-docs/your-hotels-setup/settings/pax-combinations.md). And the room type must be **Per Occupancy**, so that it has a 1-adult row at all.

You then remove the reduction, so the 1-adult rate lands on the 2-adult rate.

Either method does it. Pick the one that reads more clearly to whoever audits your pricing later.

| Method                | What you set                      | 1-adult rate on a €200 Base Rate |
| --------------------- | --------------------------------- | -------------------------------- |
| **Base Discount**     | 0%                                | €200                             |
| **Per Person Charge** | The full per-person rate, so €100 | €200                             |

Base Discount at 0% is usually the clearer of the two. It says "no reduction for single occupancy" in one number, and it stays correct when the Base Rate changes. A Per Person Charge of €100 is tied to a €200 Base Rate. Move the Base Rate to €240 and the per-person rate becomes €120, so a €100 charge now leaves the 1-adult rate €20 below the 2-adult rate.

**Apply it across every room type** with **Bulk Update** if the rule is property-wide. Most properties that use this technique apply it everywhere.

**Then check a cell.** Open the 1-adult row of 1 room type on the base board, and on a board above it. Use the information icon to confirm the rate matches the 2-adult rate for the same room and board. The board supplement still applies per person, so a 1-adult half-board cell carries 1 adult's board charge, not 2.

{% hint style="info" %}
A minimum priced occupancy does a similar job from a different direction: the room type is always charged at the occupancy you set, and smaller parties pay that rate. It is set through the **Override Charges** dropdown in the Calculation Policies column — see [Minimum Occupancy Charge](/revhero-docs/setting-your-rates/pricing/supplements.md#minimum-occupancy-charge). If you use both controls on the same room type, check a 1-adult cell's information icon to confirm which rate you end up with.
{% endhint %}

## The board interaction toggle

When you set the single supplement as a percentage, you can choose whether that reduction also applies to the board part of the rate.

Most properties exclude the board, because meals cost per person rather than per room. That is how the toggle is set by default.

Include the board only if your contract says the discount applies to everything, meals included. Check with the person who negotiated the contract before you change this.

## Setting it up

1. **Read the contract.** The wording tells you the method. A fixed amount per night means Per Person Charge. A percentage off the double rate means Base Discount.
2. **Pick the matching method** in the single supplement column, then enter the value.
3. **Check the 1-adult row** across room types and boards against the rate you expected. If a cell is wrong, open its information icon. It shows exactly which values built the rate.
4. **Set the board interaction toggle** if you are working in percentages.
5. **Apply it across room types** with **Bulk Update** if every room type shares the same rule. Most properties do. A higher single supplement on suites than on standard rooms is also valid, where a contract or your commercial rules ask for it.
6. **Publish.** Any change returns the structure to Draft until you publish again.

## Common situations

**The 1-adult rate equals the 2-adult rate.** Either the supplement is not set, or it is set to a value that makes no difference. A Base Discount of 0% does this, and so does a Per Person Charge equal to the whole per-person rate. Set it to match the contract.

**You want 1 adult to pay the same as 2.** That is a valid rule, and a common one. See [Selling 1 adult at the 2-adult rate](#selling-1-adult-at-the-2-adult-rate).

**The supplement should be nothing at all.** Set the value to 0 in the method that matches your contract wording. Do not leave the field blank.

**The 1-adult row has disappeared.** The room type is set to Per Unit. Change its pricing model in [Room types & inventory](/revhero-docs/your-hotels-setup/settings/room-types-and-inventory.md) if 1 adult should really be sellable.

**Extra adult supplements do not change the 1-adult row.** That is correct. Extra adult supplements apply above base occupancy. One adult is below base occupancy. They are different rows and different controls.

**You sell 1 adult with 1 child.** The 1-adult rate comes from the single supplement. The child's charge is then added by the children supplement.
