# What RoomPulse shops

The sources, markets, stay lengths and rate types behind the numbers on the Market Rates screen.

Every rate in RoomPulse was read under a specific set of conditions — a channel, a market, a stay length, a rate type and a device. Knowing which conditions produced a number is what stops you drawing the wrong conclusion from it.

All of these are chosen on the [Market Rates](/revhero-docs/roompulse/market-rates.md) filter bar, or set as defaults in [Rate settings](/revhero-docs/roompulse/rate-settings.md).

*A number on screen is one stay date, one stay length and one market together.*

## Sources

The **Source** filter decides which channel's rates you are reading.

| Source                                   | What it covers                                                                                  |
| ---------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Any Provider** | The lowest rate found, whichever channel it came from |
| **Booking**                              | Booking.com                                                                                     |
| **Expedia**                              | Expedia                                                                                         |
| **Brand.com**                            | A property's own website and booking engine — the direct price                                  |
| **TUI UK**, **TUI DE**, **HolidayCheck** | Packaged rates, with a hotel-only comparison so a package can be read against a room-only price |

{% hint style="info" %}
Comparing **Brand.com** against **Booking** for the same dates is the fastest read on whether your competitors are pricing their direct channel to win, or leaving it level with the OTAs.
{% endhint %}

## Markets

The **Region** filter sets the point of sale that rates are read from. The same room on the same night can carry a different price depending on the market a guest is buying from, so the region you choose is part of the question you are asking.

If you are trying to reconcile a price you saw yourself against one on screen, check the region first. It is the most common explanation for a difference you cannot otherwise account for.

## Stay length

By default RoomPulse reads **one-night stays**, which is the cleanest basis for comparing a headline rate.

That is not the right basis for every property. A resort selling a five-night minimum gets nothing useful from a one-night comparison, so a property can set a different default stay length in **Nights Stay** on the **General Settings** tab of [Rate settings](/revhero-docs/roompulse/rate-settings.md). A change there applies from the following day.

Whatever the default, you can read any other length on demand from the **LOS** filter on [Market Rates](/revhero-docs/roompulse/market-rates.md), from 1 to 8+ nights.

{% hint style="info" %}
With an LOS above 1, the rate shown is the **average nightly rate** across the stay, not the total. That is what makes it comparable to a one-night price.
{% endhint %}

## Rate type and device

Two filters decide which version of a price you are looking at:

* **Rate type** — **Any Rate**, **Public Rates** (no membership needed) or **Member Rates** (where a channel or a direct site offers a logged-in or loyalty price).
* **Device** — **Any Device**, **Desktop** or **Mobile Web**. Mobile-only discounts are common, and a competitor who looks level with you on desktop may be selling below you on a phone.

### Any Rate with Any Device — all of it at once

Set **Rate type** to **Any Rate** and **Device** to **Any Device**, and RoomPulse shops every version of the price together:

* the **public** rate anyone can book,
* the **mobile** rate a guest sees on a phone,
* the **member** rate a logged-in or loyalty guest is offered.

You then see the cheapest of them — the price a determined guest would actually find.

This is the biggest time saver on the screen. Checking those 3 prices by hand means opening each competitor on a desktop browser, opening each one again on a phone, and signing in to see the member price. For a comp set of 6 hotels across a month of stay dates, that is hours of work. Here it is one view, for every competitor and every date at once.

Public desktop rates are the everyday basis for the screen. When you filter to member rates, mobile rates, or the Any / Any combination, use **Refresh Results** to fetch them for the filters you have set.

## Meal basis, occupancy and room type

Three further filters narrow what counts as a comparable rate: **Meal** (the board basis), **Guests** (the minimum occupancy) and **Room Type**. Each one changes the answer, so keep them consistent when you compare one period against another.

Saved filter sets are the practical way to do this — see [Market Rates](/revhero-docs/roompulse/market-rates.md).
