# Room mapping

Match every hotel's rooms to shared categories, so that RoomPulse compares comparable rooms and not just cheap ones.

Every hotel names its rooms differently. You might sell a *Deluxe Double Sea View*. The competitor down the road sells a *Premium Room with Sea View*. Until you place those 2 rooms in the same category, comparing their prices tells you very little.

Room mapping is where you place each shopped room into a shared category. You do this for your own rooms and for every competitor's rooms.

The category a room sits in appears as **Type** in the [Market Rates](/revhero-docs/roompulse/market-rates.md) day detail. Correct categories are what make the median and the percentage against the median an honest comparison.

Mapping is not only a RoomPulse setting. Revhero reads it too, on the screens you price from every day. See [What mapping changes inside Revhero](#what-mapping-changes-inside-revhero) below.

Open room mapping from the **gear** icon, then the **Room Mapping** tab.

![Room mapping, and what a bad match does](https://272652298-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FnzEa7YGji6t92Mfc0ZJ1%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-e8fb63778f1d98a7e02afa675438dab2fba07e4a%2Fwhen-a-room-match-is-off.svg?alt=media)

*Mapped into the same category, two prices compare like for like. When the room behind the price changes, a rise appears that never happened.*

## The categories

4 categories are built in:

* **Single**
* **Standard**
* **Premium**
* **Suite**

You can add up to **10** categories of your own. You can also hide any built-in category you do not use.

## What is on the screen

| Area                 | What it holds                                                                             |
| -------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Source** | The channel whose rooms you are mapping. Choose this first |
| **Room Actions** | The menu for managing categories and for automatic mapping |
| **Hotel tabs** | Your property first, then each competitor. A red badge counts that hotel's unmapped rooms |
| **Hotel Rooms** | The selected hotel's shopped rooms, shown as chips you can drag |
| **Category columns** | Single, Standard, Premium, Suite and any categories you added. These are the drop targets |

Each room chip has an **info** icon. It shows that room's **Size**, **Max persons**, **Bed type**, **Amenities** and **View**. That is enough to judge where the room belongs without leaving the screen.

## Mapping a hotel

1. Choose the **Source** you want to compare on.
2. Select a hotel tab. Start with your own property, because everything else is measured against it.
3. **Drag** each room from **Hotel Rooms** into the category that matches it. The target column is outlined as you drag.
4. Watch the red badge count down. When the hotel is finished, the panel reads **"All Rooms are mapped!"** and the badge clears.
5. Move to the next tab and repeat, until every hotel is done.

A room stays in the Hotel Rooms tray, unmapped, until you drop it into a category.

## Mapping each channel

Hotels list their rooms differently on each channel. The same room can be a *Deluxe Double Sea View* on Booking.com and a *Premium Room, Sea View* on Expedia, and a channel may not carry every room. So RoomPulse keeps a **separate mapping for each channel**. Mapping a hotel on Booking.com does not map it on Expedia.

The **Source** selector at the top of the screen chooses the channel you are mapping.

| Source        | What it holds                                   |
| ------------- | ----------------------------------------------- |
| **Booking**   | Each hotel's rooms as listed on Booking.com     |
| **Expedia** | Each hotel's rooms as listed on Expedia |
| **Brand.com** | Each hotel's rooms as listed on its own website |

### Which channels to map

You do not have to map every channel. Map the channels you compare on.

| Channel | When to map it |
| ------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Booking** | Always, and first. The competitor figures in Revhero, such as the **COMPETITOR RATE (BCOM)** columns on [Daily Performance](/revhero-docs/your-hotels-performance/daily-performance.md), use Booking.com rates |
| **Expedia** | When you set the **Source** filter on [Market Rates](/revhero-docs/roompulse/market-rates.md) to Expedia |
| **Brand.com** | When you compare hotels' own website prices, for example to see who sells cheaper direct than on the OTAs |

A channel you have not mapped still shows rates on [Market Rates](/revhero-docs/roompulse/market-rates.md). They are each hotel's cheapest available room on that channel, and the **Type** column shows **None**.

### How to map a second channel

1. Finish **Booking** first, for your own hotel and every competitor.
2. Change **Source** to the next channel, for example **Expedia**.
3. Start with your own hotel's tab again, then work through each competitor.
4. Put the same physical room in the **same category** on every channel. If a competitor's sea-view double is **Premium** on Booking, make it **Premium** on Expedia too, whatever the channel calls it. Use the **info** icon on each room to compare size, beds and view.
5. Repeat for each channel you compare on.

## Room Actions

| Action                     | What it does                                                                                                                                 |
| -------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Add a room type** | Creates a new category. The **Add Room Type** dialog takes a **Name** and a **Set Position** for where the category sits in the column order |
| **Edit a room type** | Renames an existing category, which you choose from **Select Room Type** |
| **Hide system room types** | Hides the built-in categories you do not use |
| **Auto Mapping** | Places rooms into categories for you |

## Auto Mapping

**Auto Mapping** gives you a first version of the mapping instead of an empty screen.

Auto Mapping places each room by its size, its view and how many people it sleeps.

You can run it for the whole comp set, or for a single property with **Auto map this hotel**. A single property is useful when 1 competitor has restructured their rooms, and you do not want to disturb mapping you have already corrected for the others.

Auto Mapping **overwrites** mapping you have already done, so it asks you first: *"This action will overwrite your room types configuration. Are you sure?"* Choose **Yes** to run it, or **No** to cancel.

{% hint style="info" %}
Treat the result as a starting point, not an answer. What makes 2 rooms comparable is commercial judgement, and you know your rooms better than any automatic rule. Expect to run Auto Mapping and then correct it by dragging. Allow 1 or 2 hours for a full comp set the first time.
{% endhint %}

Mapping is never locked. Change it whenever you want. Nothing else has to be run again afterwards.

## Enrich Rooms

Competitors add and withdraw room types all the time. A mapping that was complete last month quietly stops being complete.

**Enrich Rooms** runs a discovery pass for 1 property. It adds the room types that have appeared since you last mapped that hotel, and it removes the ones that have gone.

RoomPulse does not tell you when a hotel adds a room type, so make this a habit. Run it for each property about once a month, and after you add a competitor. Also run it any time a competitor's rates start to look different from what you expect. If it reports nothing new for that hotel, move to the next tab and run it there.

## Where mapping is used

* The category a room sits in becomes its **Type** in the [Market Rates](/revhero-docs/roompulse/market-rates.md) day detail. A rate whose room is unmapped shows **None** there.
* Correct mapping is what makes the **Median Compset Rate**, and the percentage against it, a like-for-like comparison.
* In [Calendar settings](/revhero-docs/roompulse/rate-settings/calendar.md) you choose whether a calendar cell is labelled with the mapped category or with the competitor's own room name.

## What mapping changes inside Revhero

RoomPulse and Revhero are one package, and the same mapping is read on both sides. This is why room mapping is worth the hour it takes.

**Mapped properly, those screens compare like for like.** A competitor's rate is read from the room category that matches the room you are pricing.

**Without mapping, the comparison falls back to the lowest rate that property has available.** That may be a single room, a room with no view, or a room far smaller than yours. The number is real, but it is not the number you want to price against — and on a date where a competitor has sold out their cheapest rooms, it moves for reasons that have nothing to do with their pricing.

So the work you do on this screen decides whether the competitor figures you read in Revhero are a fair comparison or a rough one.

## If a comparison looks wrong

Check room mapping first.

A competitor who appears to have dropped €60 overnight has usually sold out of their cheapest room. A larger room is now their lowest available price.

[Market Rates](/revhero-docs/roompulse/market-rates.md) marks that case, but only where the rooms are mapped.
