# Rate settings

The configuration behind RoomPulse. It sets what gets shopped, who you are compared against, and the thresholds that colour every screen.

Rate settings is where you configure RoomPulse for one property. Open it from the **gear** icon on the Rate Shopper bar.

It opens on **General Settings**. The rest of the configuration sits in tabs across the top.

| Tab | What it controls |
| --------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **General Settings** | The period, currency and length of stay that get shopped |
| **Calendar** | How the [Market Rates](/revhero-docs/roompulse/market-rates.md) calendar displays each day. See [Calendar settings](/revhero-docs/roompulse/rate-settings/calendar.md) |
| **Price** | The deviation and ranking thresholds behind the colours. See [Price settings](/revhero-docs/roompulse/rate-settings/price.md) |
| **Availability** | The room counts that set an availability band. See [Availability settings](/revhero-docs/roompulse/rate-settings/availability.md) |
| **Room Mapping** | How each hotel's rooms line up with yours. See [Room mapping](/revhero-docs/roompulse/rate-settings/room-mapping.md) |
| **Competitors** | Your comp set. See [Competitors & competitor groups](/revhero-docs/roompulse/rate-settings/competitors.md) |
| **Competitor Groups** | Named subsets of that comp set. See [Competitors & competitor groups](/revhero-docs/roompulse/rate-settings/competitors.md) |

Your **comp set** is the list of hotels you have chosen as your direct competitors.

The tabs do 2 different jobs.

| These tabs | Decide |
| -------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Competitors** and **Room Mapping** | *What the data is*: who you are compared against, and how their rooms line up with yours |
| **Price**, **Availability** and **Calendar** | *How the data is shown*: the thresholds that turn a number into a warning, and how the calendar displays it |
| **General Settings** | The limits of the whole exercise |

Every tab saves the same way. **Save** commits your changes. **Reset** discards them.

## General Settings

| Setting | What it does |
| ------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Operational Period** | **All Year**, or **Seasonal** with a start month and an end month — for example May to October. This sets the period RoomPulse shops and monitors |
| **Currency** | The currency prices are shown in |
| **Nights Stay** | The default length of stay that is shopped. A resort that sells a 5-night minimum gets a more useful comparison from 5 nights than from 1 |
| **Ignore partner offers** | Excludes Booking.com partner and loyalty offers from the rates shopped |

{% hint style="info" %}
The operational period lives here, not on the Calendar tab. The Calendar tab decides how days are *displayed*. General Settings decides which days are *shopped*.
{% endhint %}

## How the tabs work together

| Tab | Its role |
| ------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Competitors** | Sets who you are compared against |
| **Competitor Groups** | Tags those competitors, so you can compare against part of the comp set |
| **Room Mapping** | Matches every hotel's rooms to shared categories, so that the median and the percentage against the median mean something |
| **Price** and **Availability** | Set the thresholds that decide when a day deserves a second look |
| **Calendar** | Decides how all of it is displayed on [Market Rates](/revhero-docs/roompulse/market-rates.md) |
| **General Settings** | Sets the limits: the period, the currency and the stay length |

## Getting it right the first time

1. Build the comp set before anything else. Everything after it is compared against the comp set.
2. Map the rooms next. Start with your own property. An unmapped comp set produces comparisons that look confident and mean nothing.
3. Set the price and availability thresholds to numbers that would genuinely make you look. If you set them too tight, every day becomes a warning, which is the same as no warning at all.
4. Only then build your [Alerts](/revhero-docs/roompulse/alerts.md).
