# Revhero in 10 lessons

A 10-lesson course, from your first look at Revhero to running a property on your own. Every lesson has a worked example and a practice exercise.

The rest of this manual is a reference. You look something up, you read it, you close it.

This section is a course. The lessons are in order, each one builds on the last, and every lesson asks you to do something on your own property. You learn the job, not only the screens.

![The 4 parts of the course, and what you can do after each one](https://272652298-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FnzEa7YGji6t92Mfc0ZJ1%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-a0a0fe5356e6cd6a87d7b309b4d2a5349454aa9b%2Fthe-learning-path.svg?alt=media)

*Each part ends with something you can do on your own hotel. By part 4 you are running the property yourself.*

## Who this is for

You are new to Revhero. You may be new to revenue management as well, or you may have done the job for years in a spreadsheet. Either way, start at lesson 1.

You need 2 things before you begin:

1. A Revhero login for a real property. Every exercise uses your own hotel.
2. About 30 minutes per lesson.

{% hint style="success" %}
**Short of time?** Do lessons 1, 5 and 7. You will be able to read a date and send a rate safely. Come back for the rest when the week is quieter.
{% endhint %}

## How each lesson works

Every lesson has the same 5 parts, in the same order.

| Part                         | What it does                                                                        |
| ---------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **In this lesson** | What you will be able to do at the end. Read it first, and read it again at the end |
| **The teaching** | The idea itself, with a diagram |
| **Worked example** | The same 50-room hotel, every time, with real numbers |
| **Try it on your own hotel** | Numbered steps on your own property. This is the part that teaches |
| **Check yourself** | A few questions. The answers are hidden until you open them |

The worked example uses 1 hotel all the way through the course. It has 50 rooms. Last night it sold 40 of them and took €4,800 in room revenue. Those numbers return in almost every lesson.

## The 4 parts

### Part 1 — Understand the numbers

You cannot price a date you cannot read. These 4 lessons teach the numbers.

| Lesson | You will be able to |
| ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| [1 · Where your data comes from](/revhero-docs/learn-revhero/learn/01-where-the-numbers-come-from.md) | Say when your data arrived, and judge whether it is safe to act on |
| [2 · Occupancy, ADR and RevPAR](/revhero-docs/learn-revhero/learn/02-the-five-numbers.md) | Read occupancy, ADR, RevPAR, revenue and room nights, and say which one is in charge |
| [3 · Pickup and booking pace](/revhero-docs/learn-revhero/learn/03-pickup-and-pace.md) | Tell speed apart from level, and say whether a date is building or stalling |
| [4 · LY, STLY and budget](/revhero-docs/learn-revhero/learn/04-choosing-a-comparison.md) | Pick LY, STLY or budget, and know why the other two would mislead you |

### Part 2 — Read a date

| Lesson | You will be able to |
| ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | -------------------------------------------------------------- |
| [5 · How to read one date](/revhero-docs/learn-revhero/learn/05-reading-one-date.md) | Read a single date end to end and say what it is worth |
| [6 · Which dates need your attention](/revhero-docs/learn-revhero/learn/06-does-this-date-need-you.md) | Decide in under a minute whether a date deserves a rate change |

### Part 3 — Act

| Lesson | You will be able to |
| ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| [7 · How to send a rate](/revhero-docs/learn-revhero/learn/07-sending-a-rate-safely.md) | Send a rate, read the preview properly, and check it arrived |
| [8 · How to use Rate Recommendations](/revhero-docs/learn-revhero/learn/08-working-with-recommendations.md) | Accept, modify, override or skip, and know which one this date needs |
| [9 · Min Rate and Max Rate](/revhero-docs/learn-revhero/learn/09-your-price-band.md) | Set a Min Rate and a Max Rate you can defend, and read the flag when a rate sits outside them |

### Part 4 — Build the habit

| Lesson | You will be able to |
| -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------- |
| [10 · Your first 4 weeks](/revhero-docs/learn-revhero/learn/10-putting-it-together.md) | Run the property on your own, on a 4-week practice plan |

## How long it takes

Most people take 2 to 3 weeks, at 1 lesson a day, with days off. That is the pace we recommend.

Doing all 10 lessons in a single afternoon does not work. The exercises need your bookings to move overnight, and part of what you are learning is what a normal day looks like at your hotel.

{% hint style="warning" %}
**Lesson 7 sends a real rate to your real channels.** It is written for that, and it tells you which date to pick so the risk is small. If you are not ready to send anything yet, read the lesson and do the exercise on a date far in the future.
{% endhint %}

## If you need help

* A word you do not know is in the [Glossary](/revhero-docs/support/glossary.md).
* A screen that does not match the lesson is covered in its own reference section.
* A number that looks wrong is covered in [Troubleshooting](/revhero-docs/support/troubleshooting.md).
